Espresso-based drinks

Espresso-based drinks

16th Sep 2024

We’ve all been there. You pull up to a coffee shop’s drive through and the person on the other end says “Hello, welcome to _____. What can I get for you?”. Unless you have a go-to favorite you likely ask them to hold on a minute. There are so many choices!

Here I have the simple guide to the most popular espresso-based drinks.

The Espresso-nearly boiling water forced through finely ground coffee under (ideally) 9 bars of pressure with crema on top.

Macchiato- an espresso “marked” with foamed milk

Cappuccino- follows the one-third rule. One-third espresso, one-third milk, and one-third foam.

(Caffe) latte- a small amount of espresso with hot milk and a very small amount of foam. Just called a latte in America, but beware, if you order just a “latte” in Italy, you will get a glass of milk.

Flat white- a double espresso with hot milk and a small amount of foam. Basically, a stronger latte.

Americano- Hot water and a double espresso

Cortado- an espresso with an equal amount of steamed milk.
